Rocky Bay is home to a small population of native Brown Teal that live and breed on the property.
The brown teal is the largest and only flighted member of the three brown-plumaged teals endemic to the New Zealand region. In 2011 its population was estimated to be between 1500-2500 birds in 2011 but die to conservation efforts the population is increasing. They are now mainly found in Northland, Great Barrier Island and Coromandel.
